Explore the connection between the Brunel Family and the French Revolution with a new display and film screenings.

In 1792, Marc Brunel - father of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and architect of the Thames Tunnel - was forced to flee France during the Revolution due to his political views. In France, he left Sophia, his future wife whom he had first met in France at the start of the political turmoil.

While Marc fled amidst the executions of Queen Marie Antoinette and King Louis XVI, Sophia was imprisoned during the chaos of the Revolution.

To explore the connection between the parents of Isambard Kingdom Brunel and the French Revolution, discover the Brunel Museum's French Révolution Season.

A brand-new display brings together the oldest objects in the Museum’s collection, from revolutionary money to an ornate fan — some on public display for the very first time.

A film series will provide much needed context to the political turmoil:

Dangerous Liaisons (1988, dir. Stephen Frears). Wednesday 17 September. 18:30-22:00

Marie Antoinette (2006, dir. Sophia Ford Coppola)Wednesday 24 September. 18:30-22:00

Napoleon (2023, dir. Ridley Scott)Wednesday 1 October. 18:30-22:00

Les Misérables (2012, dir. Tom Hooper)Wednesday 8 October. 18:30-22:00

Tickets can be purchased for individual screenings, or a discounted ticket offering admission to all four screenings is also available.
