Discover 500 years of book collecting at the Royal College of Physicians.
Welcome to the doctors’ library.
Books and libraries are not simply depositories of information. For centuries, they have been doctors’ most valuable tools, central to learning, practice and identity. Since its foundation in 1518, the RCP has built a library from generous donations of books and money. It reflects the interests, expertise and eclectic collecting choices of RCP members and fellows across centuries.
The story of the doctors’ library is one of curiosity, commitment and exploration – but also exploitation, neglect, rescue and survival. Events both momentous and mundane have influenced its makeup.
The exhibition will run in person at the RCP at Regent’s Park, London and with highlights online. Discover the surprising treasures of the RCP Heritage Library and explore how 500 years of book-collecting have built a wondrous, enduring library.
'Making Visible'
As part of the exhibition there will be a new art installation using the books of the Dorchester Library called ‘Making Visible’. Designed by doctoral researcher Catherine James it will highlight previously overlooked contributions of women to the RCP library.
All visitors to exhibition, ‘A body of knowledge’, in person or online will be able to view an artist’s film exploring ‘Making visible’. The Dorchester Library is not always open to the public so we will also promote viewings of the installation on a selection of dates.
