An exhibition of 51 portraits from the National Portrait Gallery.

Migration has long played a major role in Britain’s national life. It is the movement of people from one place to another, nationally or internationally, permanently or temporarily.

Lives in Motion features 51 stories dating from the 11th century through to the present day, exploring the experiences and contributions of people who have moved to Britain and made it their permanent or temporary home.

From William the Conqueror to Malala Yousafzai, the exhibition spans nearly a thousand years of history, arranged chronologically with sections exploring royalty, fame and contemporary commissions by the National Portrait Gallery. While the stories are as individual as the people in the portraits, they also highlight the resonances of lived experience across time. Lives in Motion is a touring exhibition organised by the National Portrait Gallery opening first at The Beaney House of Art & Knowledge.

The National Portrait Gallery tells the story of Britain through portraits, using art to bring history to life and explore living today. From global icons, to unsung heroes, the Collection is filled with the stories that have shaped, and continue to shape a nation.

Family friendly sensory backpacks available in the exhibition.
