Visit Dyers Barn to find out more about our historic Parkland, from Jane Austen’s connection with the local landscape to the modern conservation efforts that keep it thriving.
Jane Austen knew the Chawton landscape intimately. She moved to the village in 1809, when her brother Edward made an estate cottage available to his sisters, mother, and their friend Martha Lloyd. The Parkland—landscaped in the English style and reshaped by enclosure—is where Austen walked, thought, and wrote.
The Selborne Landscape Partnership now stewards this historic landscape, ensuring that the fields, woods, and hedgerows Austen knew continue to thrive. From walking paths to wildlife, this free exhibition explores the enduring connection between literature and land.
