Martin Boyce reworks and references textures and forms of the built environment
Glasgow-based artist Martin Boyce explores the built environment through reworked everyday iconography, referencing modern architecture, in this exhibition. Notably inspired by Jan and Joël Martel’s 1925 concrete trees, Boyce has developed a consistent typography and lexicon of shapes which feed into his sculptural practice.
The exhibition reflects urbanism's language, infused with unexpected moments of tenderness. This is evident in his large-scale installations and reimagined utilitarian objects such as vents and telephone booths, creating poetic landscapes that blend interior and exterior spaces. Boyce won the prestigious Turner Prize in 2011 and since 2018 has been professor of sculpture at HFBK Hamburg.
