The Temperament Index, Melanie Jackson

19 January - 1 April 2024

Aspex Portsmouth is delighted to present The Temperament Index – the latest incarnation of Melanie Jackson’s travelling project ‘Spekyng Rybawdy’.*

The Temperament Index is the latest reiteration of the artists’ travelling project Spekyng Rybawdy, and invites audiences to wander amongst a carnival of colourful, erotically charged projections, cut-out figures and body parts, handmade clay objects, and drawings. Drawing from Pilgrim Badges - a series of mass-produced small cast tin or lead alloy brooches made by and for working people from the 12th to the 16th Century, the exhibition takes inspiration from a particular set of medieval obscenities known as Bawdy Badges. As symbols of dissent, sexual empowerment and liberation, these secular badges, sexual badges or erotic pins delight in hybridity and present an extravagant imaginary of social and sexual reproduction, joyfully rendered with absurdist, deflationary humour.
