Witness the boundary-pushing woodcuts by one of the most significant artists from the Germain Renaissance.
Throughout Europe during the 15th-century, monks would use woodcut printmaking to create mass-produced devotional images. With the spread of the movable-type press in the second half of the century, woodcuts became the preferred means of illustrating books.
Albrecht Dürer was the first artist to devise, create and publish a fully illustrated book, pushing the limits of this important technique. The Devil is in the Detail presents a rare opportunity to see one of Dürer’s most significant woodcut series, The Great Passion, as a complete set. It demonstrates the evolution of his style as he mastered his technical skills and was influenced by the balanced compositions of the Italian Renaissance.
Accompanying this exhibition will be a display of five contemporary woodcuts by Christiane Baumgartner, who fuses traditional techniques with modern technology.
