Contemporary painter Sara Shamma reimagines the spirit of women in historical works by the Old Masters.
Renowned artist Sara Shamma presents Bold Spirits at Dulwich Picture Gallery. Responding to the gallery's historical collection with a focus on paintings of women, Shamma channels the women’s spirits, weaving their stories in with her own life experience. Her paintings reimagine powerful works by the likes of Rembrandt and Rubens, while exploring identity, death, motherhood, and unexpected beauty. Through her technical expertise and appreciation of Old Masters, Shamma offers thought-provoking interpretations. Bold Spirits forms part of Unlocking Paintings, a series that invites contemporary artists, curated by Helen Hillyard, to offer fresh perspectives on the gallery's collection and reinterpret historic themes.
