Explore the best of post-war British sculpture by women, including significant works by Barbara Hepworth, Elisabeth Frink, Cornelia Parker and many more.
Bringing this touring exhibition to a close, Walsall hosts the fifth and final leg of its journey around the UK. Selected works from the Arts Council’s collection of more than 250 sculptures by 150 women, Breaking the Mould challenges the many accounts of British sculpture that have marginalised women or excluded their work from art history.
The selected sculptures take in a wide range of practices and materials from paper to gold leaf, textiles and light, as well as the more traditional wood, metal and stone. Loosely grouped into three main categories, the ‘Figured’, ‘Formed’ and ‘Found’ themes are explored through a diverse scope of subjects and practices.
The exhibition spans 70 years and includes pieces from over 45 sculptors including Phyllida Barlow, Sarah Lucas, Cathy de Monchaux, Eva Rothschild, Rebecca Warren and Rachel Whiteread, the first female to win the coveted Turner Prize.
