In March 1926, over a hundred members of the Order of St. John set sail on the steamship Asia, flying the Order’s flag in the Mediterranean for the first time since 1798. They were on a pilgrimage to sites associated with the history of the Order in Cyprus, Rhodes, Malta and the Holy Land. On the voyage, they listened to lectures about the history of the crusades and in Jerusalem they were shown the sword and spurs said to have belonged to Godfrey of Bouillon. As a souvenir they received a set of tiles and a painting of an investiture at Malta, both of which remain in the Museum of the Order of St John's collection.
This talk will describe the pilgrimage and some of the key individuals involved. It will also set it in the context of the Order’s history, from royal recognition in 1888 to the centenary celebrations in 1931.
