SICK TOO: Sarah Roberts in Conversation

Ever wondered how the concept behind an exhibition comes together? What exactly happens during an artist research residency?

Join artist Sarah Roberts and curator RJ Wade in conversation about the development of SICK TOO. Currently on display in Treasures of the Brotherton, SICK TOO asks questions about what we owe to one another, in sickness and in health.

In 2024, Sarah Roberts conducted a six-month artist residency at the University of Leeds. During her research, Roberts engaged with a wide variety of materials from our Cultural Collections. These ranged from photographs and books to medical instruments and artworks. Each item communicates something important about environments of care in different times and places.

In dialogue with these archives, Roberts developed SICK (a note from 40 Sandilands Road and other stories). This new work was commissioned by the University of Leeds, and shown in The Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery from April – July 2025.

SICK TOO, co-curated by Roberts, explores the creative process behind SICK in the artist's own words. A selection of objects from Cultural Collections sit alongside works made in response. It offers a personal and layered reflection on who, how and where we care.

This special event is your chance to hear directly from the artist and curator as they discuss how the exhibition came to life. A selection of additional archival materials from our Cultural Collections will be on display during the event.

SICK TOO is on display in Treasures of the Brotherton until Saturday 20 December 2025.
