Students & experts from the University of Edinburgh engage in a conversation about their approaches to modelling instruments.

Invited students and experts from the University of Edinburgh engage in a conversation about their individual approaches used to model instruments and their unique sound profiles

Using Physical Modelling Sound Synthesis — a simulator of the physics of sound production in instruments – Zuyu Chen (MA Acoustics and Music Technology) addresses the underexplored practice of physical modelling of Chinese Instruments. Zuyu’s work explores human interaction with music and heritage through digital programmes like New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME). Contemporary artist Victoria Evans works speculatively across film, composition, creative writing and print to explore sound as material and engages critically with a range of scientific and philosophical ideas through traditional and digital tools.

The Shape of Sound is a collaborative project between St. Cecilia’s Hall and students on the MScR Collections and Curating Practices postgraduate course at the University of Edinburgh.
