About the Project

Emergence = the fact of something becoming known or starting to exist; the process of becoming visible after being concealed; the process of coming into existence or prominence

In philosophy, art, science or systems theory, emergence occurs when a complex entity has properties or behaviours that its parts do not have on their own, and emerge only when they interact in a wider whole.

Reflecting on and exploring this sentiment during her residency, Mishka will be drawing on its parallels between her own creative process and emergence as an Artist and between the invisible and often magical forces of emergence of natural colour yielded from plants.

This micro-residency is a space and time for play, experimentation and putting to practise the skills and knowledge Mishka has been learning throughout this year during her Develop Your Creative Practice grant project supported by the Arts Council England.

Mishka will be looking in more depth into the notions of natural colour and its relation to emotionality, sensorial experiences of working with naturally dyed textiles and how through the natural colour originating from plants she can create a connection not just to herself and her deeper feelings, but also to those who see and engage with her artwork.

About the Artist

Mishka’s art and creative practice are informed by ecological frameworks and permaculture principles. Having experienced repeated loss of health and ongoing chronic health complications living in the city and growing up in the countryside, Mishka’s work, approaches and art practice explore our relationship to our local environments and the impacts that urban centred living have had on our creativity and wellbeing. Mishka investigates and researches this through her engagement with (hyper)locally accessed and sourced plant life and organic matter and my creative exchanges with these resources. Mishka primarily engages with natural resources through textiles and fibres in a form of natural dyeing practice and intuitive paintings using botanical inks. Mishka also works as a specialist coach and mentor to creatives, addressing topics of wellbeing and creativity and matters of neurodiversity and sensory processing and experiencing as an autistic individual and practitioner herself.
