A special talk by Tony Warden
With over 6 decades of experience working on archaeological digs, Tony shares his passion for our ancient past. From Celtic cemeteries to Roman villas, Tony uses his field research to explore the lives of ancient people and this turning point in history.
About Tony Warden: Tony Warden was born and still lives in Barnsley. He first began digging as a student volunteer in Cirencester, 1959 with a team from Leicester University (pay was £10 per week). After working on several excavations, an invitation came to work with The Ministry of Works and it all went from there. Archaeology has taken Tony up and down the country for decades, supervising digs on Roman villas, forts, town sites as well as Iron Age occupation sites and cemeteries.
Archaeology is still a passion, and Tony is currently working with English Heritage training volunteers and giving tours of Beadlam Roman Villa near Helmsley, an excavation he originally supervised in 1969. Sadly, Tony has never worked in Barnsley, so he is happy to help launch the Festival of Archaeology in his home town with us.
