The evening includes the chance to view the exhibition Out Shopping: The Dresses of Marion and Maud Sambourne (1880-1910), and the chance to buy signed copies of Strasdin’s latest book, The Dress Diary of Mrs Anne Sykes: Secrets of a Victorian Woman’s Wardrobe (Penguin Random House).

Useful information

  • Doors open at 6:30pm for the chance to see the exhibition and explore the historic house.

  • The talk with Dr Kate Strasdin will take place in Leighton's studio from 7-8:30pm

  • Book signing from 8:30-9pm. Doors closed at 9pm.

  • Bar will be open throughout the evening.

Meet Dr Kate Strasdin

Dr Kate Strasdin is a Senior Lecturer in Cultural Studies at Falmouth University. She has worked with historic dress collections for almost thirty years and has written and consulted on dress history themes in China, Australia, North America and Canada. Her first book with Bloomsbury Academic, titled Inside the Royal Wardrobe was a dress history of Queen Alexandra.

Refurbishments

In October 2022 Leighton House completed a major redevelopment that has provided the museum with improved visitor facilities, additional exhibition space, a dedicated learning centre and a brand new cafe overlooking the garden, all located in a new wing which also houses a welcoming reception area and shop.
