This summer our new Queer Household will be moving into Museum of the Home. We are raising funds to co-create a new period room set which will uncover queer stories of home in the early 2000s.

Our work with various members of the queer community has highlighted the lack of LGBTQ+ stories in our galleries, and how important it is for everybody’s story of home to be represented. Across community consultation events, drop-ins and workshops, you told us about the importance of leaving your ‘hometown’ for the big city, meeting other Queers, and creating a new home with chosen family.

Built from the research around your stories and objects, we’re telling the story of Alex, Sara and Ashley who live in an ex-council flat in Hackney. Alex has recently left their rural hometown to move to London, they met Sara and Ashley through East London’s vibrant Queer Scene. We will show a snapshot of their daily lives as they turn this flat into a home, and play a key role in the area’s LGBTQ+ community.

The objects we want to collect reflect the everyday lived experience of the recent past. This is something frequently overlooked but significant in shaping our narratives of home. This is your opportunity to get directly involved and support the acquisition of objects and stories that would otherwise be lost or discarded.

Support our new Queer Home at the world's only museum dedicated to home, and tell the untold everyday stories of Queer people in the early 00’s.

Please help us raise £10,000 to collect the objects needed to move Alex, Sara and Ashley into their new home.
