This exhibition has now closed, find out what else is going on at Hayward Gallery

This group exhibition explores one of the most conceptually challenging styles of painting that confronts both our way of seeing and thinking about contemporary art.

Bringing together 31 UK-based artists from a range of countries around the world, the exhibition includes a diverse collection of thought-provoking images and ideas. These painters exploit the characteristics and traditions of painting as a medium to create fresh perspectives and respond to topical issues.

Featuring work by artists such as Lubaina Himid, Allison Katz and Denzil Forrester, the exhibition explores how each artist treats the canvas as a place for assembling concepts, drawing on a wide range of references from music, design and advertising to fashion, art history and viral memes.

The vivid and evocative paintings on display explore the boundaries between invention and depiction. They invite you to interpret them based on your own personal experiences, allowing for different interpretations for audiences from varied backgrounds.
