Explore 800 years of local history at Michelham Priory, a magnificent Tudor mansion surrounded by a medieval moat in Hailsham.

Founded in 1229 by Augustinian canons, the priory’s buildings are a unique blend of architectural styles. Surrounding the entire priory is England’s longest medieval water-filled moat. Encircling the priory for nearly eight acres, the moat adds to the site’s picturesque charm and unique atmosphere.

What to see

Michelham Priory is owned and managed by the Sussex Archaeological Society and is recognised for its historical significance. The centerpiece is a stunning Tudor mansion, its rooms meticulously decorated to reflect various periods, including a Victorian kitchen and a World War II evacuee's bedroom. You can also explore an interactive medieval gallery, a historic watermill, and a forge.

Explore the ‘island’

Take a walk around the moat or explore the sculptures in the grounds. Outdoors there are seven acres of beautiful grounds and buildings to explore, including the Elizabethan Great Barn, medieval gatehouse, and the kitchen, physic and medieval herb gardens. Younger visitors can let off steam at the children’s play area. If your legs need a rest after all that you can relax in the on-site cafe, or feel free to bring a picnic to enjoy.
