Linlithgow Museum sheds light on the town's Royal connections, as well as central Scotland's social and industrial history.

Wander through the museum’s three galleries and discover the regal history of the Royal Burgh of Linlithgow, birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots and James V. Find out about the trades of the town and the people who lived in the Scottish town over the centuries.

Royal links

A residence for Scottish Kings in the Middle Ages, Linlithgow has a rich royal heritage. This is celebrated in the Civic Life gallery, where you can learn more about the town’s connection with the Scottish monarchy. Also on display in this part of the museum, the first life-size statue of Mary, Queen of Scots to be commissioned in Scotland.

Interactive exhibits

Fancy making your own marvellous medicine, in honour of the town’s pharmaceutical background? Discover how Dr Waldie conducted experiments with anaesthetics at his laboratory in Linlithgow. Or maybe you would like to have a ‘nose’ around the prominent trades of the working town by trying the interactive smelling exhibit.

Social history

Visitors can also learn about the tradition of the Linlithgow Marches, local politics, education and more, with exhibits including local Scottish Labour MP Tam Dalyell's typewriter and Sottish Brigade Banners.

Linlithgow museum is free to all and is fully accessible with lifts to all floors.
