Thackray Museum of Medicine

West Yorkshire

Free entry

This leading medical museum explores the story of medicine and innovation in healthcare as it has developed over hundreds of years.

The museum is located between Europe’s largest teaching hospital and some of West Yorkshire’s most deprived neighbourhoods, providing a unique opportunity to connect local people with the history of medicine in meaningful ways. Some of their community work particularly shone during the coronavirus pandemic, when they became the first museum vaccination centre.

Other projects the museum undertook included converting a historic ambulance to use for local outreach, creating content to help educate on handwashing in schools and working with the BBC to document the use of PPE in hospitals over the years. The museum also created a powerful memorial on their centre staircase to commemorate lives lost to Covid-19.

Beginning its journey in 1902 as a family-run chemist shop, its transformation into the leading medical museum it is today is particularly extraordinary. Visitors are treated to an immersive visitor experience and there are hundreds of objects and artefacts on display exploring everything from apothecary, diseases, epidemics and medical advertising, to innovation and sexual health.

Highlights in the collection include decorated European drug jars, trade catalogues and a new Covid-19 collection. A programme of events and exhibitions tackling challenging medical subjects accompanies the collection year-round, as the story of medicine is weaved through 11 exhibiting galleries.

Thackray Museum of Medicine is shortlisted for Museum of the Year 2021.
