The Box, Plymouth is a major cultural and heritage attraction and archive for Plymouth and the South West.

A series of permanent galleries showcase an extensive collection exploring archaeology, natural history, fine and decorative arts, world cultures, photography, moving image, social and maritime history and local archives.

Highlights in the collection include work by local artists such as portrait artist Joshua Reynolds, historical painter Benjamin Robert Haydon and printmaker, Cecil Collins. There is also a large display of paintings by the well-known scenic artist, JMW Turner who was particularly inspired by the spectacular landscapes on offer in the region.

Objects such as an outstanding group of argillite carvings from the North West coast of Canada and collections from Polynesia and the Lengua people of Paraguay are also on display, exploring cultures around the world.

The collections are complimented by a programme of events, exhibitions and artist commissions, and there is a seasonal restaurant on site. You can also purchase a range of gorgeous prints and trinkets from the gallery shop.
