National Roman Legion Museum

Newport

Free to all

The museum reveals how people lived, fought, worshipped and died in this farthest outpost of the mighty Roman Empire.

The fortress at Caerleon was first built in AD 75 – one of only three permanent fortifications in Roman Britain and a key military base.

Today, the inside of the fortress holds a museum devoted to exploring ancient life in both Caerleon (Isca) and Usk (Burrium), as well as their environs.

The site also houses the ruins of the most complete amphitheatre in Britain and the only remains of a Roman legionary barracks anywhere in Europe.
