Housed within the 12th-century Taunton Castle, the Museum of Somerset tells the story of the county from prehistory to the present day.

Awaiting discovery in the galleries is a Plesiosaur, a recreation of the Bloody Assizes, and a wealth of geological, archaeological, medieval and ethnoographic objects. Among the new treasures on show is the Frome Hoard, the second largest collection of Roman coins ever discovered in Britain. The Somerset Military Museum is also housed under the same roof.

As well as the permanent displays, the museum offers regularly changing temporary exhibitions.
