Located in the market town of Bishop Auckland in County Durham, this is the UK’s first gallery dedicated to Mining Art.

Ted Holloway, Testing for Gas, 1956

Mining Art Gallery, a permanent home for the Gemini Collection of Mining Art, includes more than 420 works by artists such as Tom McGuinness and Norman Cornish.

The gallery aims to help visitors understand what it felt like to work in the coalmines and to shed light on why some miners felt it necessary to paint the dark, clamorous, claustrophobic and arcane world, otherwise denied to the gaze of those above ground.
