A magnificent Tudor mansion surrounded by a medieval moat.
England’s longest medieval water-filled moat surrounds the seven-acre site dating back to 1229. As well as the magnificent Tudor mansion the island holds a 14th-century gatehouse, a working watermill and forge, a Bronze Age roundhouse, an Elizabethan great barn, a café and a play area.
Visitors can trace the priory through 800 years of history, from its foundation by Augustinian canons, through the destruction caused by the dissolution of the monasteries and finishing with its later life as a country house.
