Humber Street Gallery

Opened as part of Hull UK City of Culture 2017, Humber Street Gallery is a significant new contemporary arts space for the city.
Housed in a former fruit and vegetable warehouse, the space is directed by curator David Sinclair, who aims to ‘generate debate, push boundaries and encourage new ways of thinking’ with a diverse programme of exhibitions and events. Three gallery spaces combine with a cafe and rooftop bar to create a venue that encourages conversation and exchange.
The spring 2017 opening season offered a taste of what to expect from future programming, taking in prominent names like Sarah Lucas as well as exhibitions rooted in local cultural history, such as the first ever display of archive materials relating to influential Hull-based collective COUM Transmissions.
There’s a strong international flavour to the programming too, with initial collaborations having welcomed Rotterdam’s avant-garde network WORM, and a group show looking at the boundaries between land and sea.
The launch of Humber Street Gallery joins the reopening of the Ferens Art Gallery in making 2017 a landmark year for Hull, and in cementing the city’s reputation as a destination for visual art.
