Dean Castle & Country Park
One of Ayrshire's best-preserved castles, Dean Castle was the home and stronghold of the Boyds, Lords of Kilmarnock for over 400 years.
Formerly known as Kilmarnock Castle, the structure was restored in the early 1900's by the 8th Lord Howard de Walden, after a fire in 1735 had reduced it to ruins. A further renovation and restoration project was undertaken in 2018 to future proof the building for generations to come. Set within a beautiful park, Dean Castle houses displays of arms, armour and early musical instruments.
Castle defence
The Keep was built in the mid 14th century by Sir Thomas Boyd as a defence structure. Today it houses displays telling of Boyd's family history and showcases East Ayrshire’s outstanding collections of arms and armour, including the Eglinton Watercolours and Shields which were bought with Art Fund help.
Mediaeval musicmakers
Don't miss The Banqueting Hall which holds an impressive, Nationally Significant Collection of historic musical instruments which includes lutes, harpsichords and harps and boasts one of the earliest violins in existence.
Get close to nature
The area surrounding the castle is expansive and filled with wildlife and nature trails. Experience the different landscapes and habitats that make the park nature positive. You could even have a go at the 1.4km long orienteering course.
The castle and country park are a great way to spend a day out, with the dog friendly Treehouse Café offering the ideal pit stop, with beautiful views and a good selection of refreshments.
