Nestled in the heart of Pickering, Beck Isle Museum celebrates the rich history of this rural market town on the border of the North Yorkshire Moors.
The museum was set up in 1967 by a passionate group of local people intent on preserving Pickering's history. Their vast collection of around 50,000 items has been grown thanks to the donations of people living in the area and contains objects and art relating to photography, domestic life, farming, textiles and more.
There is a rolling programme of events, exhibitions and family activities exploring local culture and heritage and the surrounding greenery provides multiple lovely spots for a picnic. On site you can visit shops from the past, discover ancient crafts and marvel at intriguing machinery such as a historic printing press. Plus, there are a number of collections dedicated to local photographers, a collection of photos by Sydney Smith (1884-1958) provides a window into rural Pickering in the early 20th century.
The museum is just a stone's throw from the North Yorkshire Moors, perfect for combining a culture trip with getting back to nature.
