Housed inside The Vulcan Building, a former Navy storehouse in Gunwharf Quays, this contemporary art gallery specialises in showcasing emerging artists.

Formed in 1981, Aspex Gallery moved from a converted chapel to The Vulcan Building in 2006. Since then they have become known for championing the work of early-career artists. Notable artists to have exhibited there at the start of their careers include British sculptor, photographer and installation artist Helen Chadwick, one of the first women artists to be nominated for the Turner Prize.

Aspex were also instrumental in bringing an installation by Welsh artist duo, Heather and Ivan Morison to Portsmouth in 2010. The installation Luna Park includes a 53ft recreated dinosaur Ultrasaurous, now based in Southsea Common.

Recently, Aspex Gallery have partnered with PONToon to deliver an ambitious programme focused on enhancing digital skills for women aged 18-35 to develop employability in a competitive job market.
