This art gallery in a Grade I listed Georgian building has been part of Kendal’s history for over 250 years.

Originally built in 1759 as the family home Colonel George Wilson of Dallam Tower, after passing through several owners it had fallen into disrepair. In the early 1960s, a group of local people came together to form a charitable trust to save, restore and reopen this iconic building as an art gallery. It is now part of Lakeland Arts.

Its collection of historic and contemporary art is one of the largest of its kind in the North of England, with a strong focus on landscapes. The collection includes over 3,000 works on paper, watercolours by JMW Turner and John Ruskin and contemporary works by Charmaine Watkiss, Andy Goldsworthy and Emma Stibbon. There is also a Modern British collection including works by Lucian Freud, Bridget Riley, Dame Barbara Hepworth, David Hockney, Paula Rego and Kurt Schwitters.
