Where to use your Student Art Pass this Christmas
Whether you’re staying near uni or heading elsewhere for the holidays, these museums, galleries, parks and castles have lots to offer over the festive season.
You might think that things would quieten down over winter, but there are still plenty of places to visit with your Student Art Pass.
We’ve picked seven great spots for a festive walk, a bit of a detox from all those treats or – let’s be honest – just an escape from the chaos.
These venues all have good opening hours over the Christmas and New Year period. We’ve offered an overview below, but be sure to check their own websites or call ahead for the most detailed information.
- West Yorkshire
Open every day except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, the sprawling lands of Yorkshire Sculpture Park have long been a favourite choice for a Boxing Day stroll in West Yorkshire. Discover striking works in the landscape, and pick up some last-minute gifts in the stylish shop.
- Greater Manchester
Acres of deer park surrounded by moorland makes Lyme perfect for a winter walk. Reachable from Manchester and Stockport, the park is open every day except Christmas Day – while the house and garden have varying opening times over the festive period, so check the website for details.
- East Sussex
What better way to beat the festive slump than with a bracing trip to the beach? A mooch along Hastings’ seafront will bring you to Jerwood Gallery – closed before Christmas (22-26 Dec), but reopening on the 27th and open on both New Year’s Eve and Day. See thought-provoking contemporary art, and cosy up with a mug of something hot in the café.
- West Yorkshire
Themed and dressed by a specially commissioned creative director, Harewood goes all-out during the festive season. Expect a Christmas ‘dreamscape’ with music, events and experiences across the house and grounds – closed Christmas Eve and Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, but otherwise open.
Another venue that's transformed into a Christmas fairytale, Chatsworth’s festive experience includes seasonal scenes woven through the house and storytellers roaming the halls – open every day except Christmas Eve and Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
Is it really New Year’s in Edinburgh without an expedition to Arthur’s Seat? Before you set out – or when you come back down – discover artefacts and curiosities at the National Museum of Scotland, open daily except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
- South Glamorgan
Restless family members can occupy themselves with a dose of medieval history at Cardiff Castle, before walking off those indulgent leftovers along the River Taff. The castle is open every day except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
