Seven romantic dates

Published 12 February 2013

We've selected seven of Britain's most romantic venues to help you plan the perfect romantic day out for that someone special.

The best thing about our favourite romantic dates is that entry to each of them is free or reduced price with your National Art Pass.

1. V&A (Victoria & Albert Museum), London
50% off exhibitions with National Art Pass

With one of the great royal romances as its namesake, the V&A is an ideal venue for a London date. Romantic pieces like Fanelli's Venus, Adonis and Cupid will set sparks flying, or visitors can simply relax in the serene John Madejski Garden.

2. Chirk Castle, Wrexham
Free entry with National Art Pass

Situated in the hills of north Wales, Chirk Castle commands a breathtaking view over nine counties, perfect for a proposal?

3. Yorkshire Sculpture Park, West Yorkshire
Free to all

Beautiful architecture can help create the perfect romantic atmosphere, but sometimes less is more. The green expanses of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park are dotted with iconic sculptures, creating a perfect balance of culture and isolation.

4. Ashmolean Museum, Oxford
50% off exhibitions with National Art Pass

With a collection spanning from ancient Egypt to the 20th century, there's something at the Ashmolean to get anyone's pulse racing. What's more, the museum's glamorous roof-terrace restaurant combines fantastic food with a beautiful view over Oxford.

5. Horniman Museum and Gardens, London
Reduced price entry to exhibitions with National Art Pass

With a panoramic view of London, the gardens of the Horniman offer a breathtaking vantage point for any date. Budding botanists can explore herbaceous borders and sunken gardens, while fans of the sea will enjoy the Horniman's acclaimed aquarium (standard entry charge applies).

6. Lyme Park, Greater Manchester
Free entry with National Art Pass

The grounds of this spectacular Tudor-cum-Italian palace were host to one of the most iconic moments in British television: Mr Darcy, played by Colin Firth, emerging from the lake in the 1995 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. Visitors to Lyme can enjoy not only the lake but a range of impressive tapestries and beautifully furnished rooms.

7. Eltham Palace, London
Free entry with National Art Pass

When Stephen and Virginia Courtauld chose to build their dream home together, they transformed the remains of Henry VIII's childhood residence into an Art Deco mansion. A true labour of love, the house is also host to expansive gardens, perfect for a picnic.
