How to keep connected to museums online
With museums and galleries currently closed, here's our round-up of some of the most immersive online exhibitions to explore right now.
As spring blooms we know you’ll be missing filling your diaries with the season’s blockbuster exhibitions.
But the UK’s museums and galleries have been working hard to ensure you can still experience some of the shows they had planned for you.
From a close-up look around the Andy Warhol exhibition at Tate Modern to a video tour of Cranach: Artist and Innovator at Compton Verney, you can get your gallery fix digitally this spring.
Check out some of our picks below, and why not bookmark this page? We’ll be updating this piece regularly with our latest recommendations, so be sure to come back for more.
Happy browsing.
In focus: Andy Warhol at Tate Modern
Think you know Andy Warhol? Look again… Tate's exhibition offers a new angle on this truly iconic figure, showing a number of works never seen before in the UK, and providing a rare chance to see works from his Ladies and Gentlemen series – portraits of black and Latinx drag queens and trans women – which are on display for the first time in 30 years.
Join curators Gregor Muir and Fiontán Moran on a video tour as they take you through each room of the exhibition and explore Warhol’s immigrant story, his LGBTQI identity and his preoccupations with particular themes.
More online exhibitions to explore
Make sure you don’t leave (virtual) Tate without also checking out the Aubrey Beardsley exhibition. Bringing together some of his most dramatic and decadent drawings, it’s an intoxicating trip back to late-Victorian London and into the mind of this intense young illustrator.
Cranach: Artist and Innovator video tour
Warwickshire’s Compton Verney also have a video tour of their Cranach: Artist and Innovator exhibition, which explores the work of Renaissance painter Lucas Cranach the Elder and brings it right up to date by looking at his influence on contemporary artists such as Raqib Shaw and Claire Partington.
Judy Chicago digital exhibition
The vibrant work of feminist artist, author and educator Judy Chicago is a treat to view online through extensive photography and audio walkthroughs of her exhibition at Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art.
If you loved the Frida Kahlo: Making Her Self Up exhibition at the V&A in 2018 or didn’t manage to get tickets, you can see excerpts of it as part of Faces of Frida, a huge online exhibition of more than 800 of the Mexican artist’s paintings, objects and photographs, created in collaboration between Google Arts & Culture and more than 30 museum collections around the world, including the V&A.
