Howardena Pindell (b. 1943, Philadelphia) is a major contemporary artist based in the US. This is the first UK museum presentation of her work. Encompassing the poetic and the political, Pindell’s remarkable practice over five decades draws from her own experience as a Black female artist, teacher, and activist. Her compelling, beautiful, and urgent art responds to and reflects some of the fundamental issues of our time.
A New Language brings together work from Howardena Pindell’s six-decade long career including paintings, works on paper and video. The exhibition traces the development of Pindell’s experiments in artistic form. Her work continues to respond to racism from the 1970s to the present day.
