Glyn Philpot (1884-1937) was best known for his depictions of notable contemporary figures such as Siegfried Sassoon and Vladimir Rosing – the exhibition explores how the artist developed from painting Edwardian society to pioneering a radical modernist approach to art in the 1930s.
Portraits of actors, dancers, poets and society hostesses sit along depictions of the artist’s lovers and friends, plus there is a particular focus on Philpot’s representation of Black sitters, exploring how these portraits of unknown Black subjects relate to wider dialogues around identity and representation in modern art.
80 paintings, drawings and sculptures will be on display, demonstrating how Glyn Philpot shook off convention to embrace modernism, all whilst retaining his reputation as one of the most sought-after society portraitists of the era.
