This display explores the life and work of Warwickshire artist Laura Cookes, whose magnificent copy of Raphael’s Madonna della Seggiola is housed at Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum. Little known until now, Dr Sharon Fermor has uncovered the fascinating life of this late 19th century artist, revealing the unique obstacles she faced as a female artist. This display will explore Cookes’ role within the local network of artisans and her contribution to the rich tradition of Renaissance copying during this period.
