From Joseph Beuys to Paul Cezanne, a new collection of 20th century drawings will go on display at the Courtauld Gallery.

An exquisite collection of modern post-war drawings gifted by the artist Linda Karshan will go on display at the Courtauld Gallery in memory of her husband Howard Karshan. Linda Karshan is an American artist best known for her performance-based abstract drawings, and her late husband Howard was an avid collector of 20th century modern art.

Together they formed an incredible collection of modern art focused on American and European modern artists, including contemporary trailblazer Joseph Beuys, ‘art brut’ (or ‘raw art’) painter Louis Soutter, abstract pioneer Wassily Kandinsky and post-impressionist Paul Cezanne. The works on display range from delicate watercolours and finger paintings, to complex abstract compositions, characterised by innovative markings and distinctive lines.

This incredible gift to the Courtauld will transform the permanent collection of 20th century art, bringing exquisite work by some of these iconic artists to the gallery for the first time.
