Samson Kambalu imagines a world where racial justice prevails in this powerful installation.
An artist known for his vivid imagination and creativity, Samson Kambalu uses a mixture of video, text, images and sculpture to create an imagined initiation ceremony for a utopia of racial justice. New Liberia marks a mass change in attitudes spurred on by the coronavirus pandemic and global Black Lives Matter protests that took place in 2020.
The exhibition also explores elements of Kambalu’s Malawian heritage such as growing up watching Nyau dances and living under a dictatorship as a result of British colonial rule.
