Works by four female artists, all born in the late 19th century who saw, and recorded through portraiture, a time of great change for women in Britain.

Curated by the Laing Art Gallery, this exhibition brings together portraits by four influential painters, Bloomsbury Group member Vanessa Bell, first woman elected to full membership of the Royal Academy Laura Knight, president of the St Ives Society of Artists Dod Procter and Welsh artist and Slade Art School alumna Gwen John.

Each artist had a significant impact on the profile of women artists within traditional institutions and in the public eye. The four women also witnessed extraordinary change through the turn of the 20th century and beyond when modernism, change and increasing emancipation was juxtaposed with the struggle to challenge convention imposed by a consistently patriarchal society.
