This immersive installation is the first large-scale solo exhibition of work by Beijing-based multimedia artist and filmmaker Cao Fei, whose work explores our relationship with the virtual world.
Born in 1978, Cao Fei creates video, digital media and photography to explore the themes of automation, virtuality and technology in this age of rapid technological development.
Her work looks at the relationship between the physical world and virtual reality, and how virtuality has altered our perception. This project brings together new and existing works in an immersive installation that presents topics like the alienating effects of mechanised labour in China, the potential of modern-day cities and people’s search of escapism via virtual platforms like Second Life.
