Discover an alternative, unseen Edinburgh as a specially created video guides you on a walk through the Old Town at twilight.

Canadian artists Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller return to Edinburgh to make one of the mesmerising video walks for which they are acclaimed throughout the world.

Following Cardiff’s voice and walking in her footsteps, you will be led through the backstreets of the Old Town, unravelling a disjointed tale – part game-playing, part surrealistic poetry, perhaps even a murder mystery – layered with history, invention and memories.

The Fruitmarket Gallery is presenting Night Walk for Edinburgh, acquired with Art Fund support and part of Edinburgh Art Festival, while its building is closed for refurbishment and the creation of an expansive new space for culture, opening 2020.

Please note: this event is now sold out – but as the work will become part of the gallery’s permanent collection, it will be re-staged regularly from early 2020. Please check venue website for more information.

The walk uses a digital tablet and headphones, to be collected from and returned to: The Milkman 7 Cockburn Street, Edinburgh. It is a night walk in the Old Town of Edinburgh and the route includes staircases, steep hills and uneven surfaces in low light. The piece may also provoke a sense of disorientation so please be aware of your surroundings as you take part. Comfortable shoes and appropriate clothing are recommended.
