This exhibition includes specially commissioned works by artists Ruth Barker and Hannah Leighton-Boyce after research residencies through Castlefield Gallery.
Barker works primarily in performance and performative-writing, and her practice has an on-going engagement with the voice. In these new works Barker explores her own mortality and an anxiety around motherhood, illness, physical vulnerability. Originally performed at Castlefield Gallery on International Women's Day 2018, If this is the last thing that I say (2018) is an assemblage of spoken word and sound, sculptural objects and fabric works.
Leighton-Boyce explores historical narratives through site-specific responses, actions, sculpture, drawing, sound and installation. She references the story of Lot’s (unnamed) Wife who was turned to a pillar of salt for defying the angels (Genesis 19:26), and her new body of works includes sculptures cast from salt, and powered by salt, as well as photographic works.
The exhibition also includes newly commissioned work from the award-winning writer of fiction, poetry and plays Professor Jackie Kay MBE.
