Centre Stage: Entertainment in Art

Barber Institute of Fine Arts

22 June – 7 October 2018

This display reveals the fascination that the theatre and circus holds for artists.

Hilaire-Germain-Edgar Degas, The Cirque Fernando – Architectural Study, 1879

The dynamism, spectacle and artifice of the stage – whether theatre or circus – have fascinated artists since time immemorial, and this display acknowledges the 250th anniversary of the circus in the UK.

The selection of works on paper from the Barber's collection explores how Degas, Sickert and others have portrayed figures linked to the stage, such as actors and performers, who are themselves creating illusion and representing the world around them.
