Devised specially for the redesigned Kettle’s Yard, Antony Gormley: SUBJECT is the new gallery’s first exhibition by a solo artist.
Antony Gormley continues his explorations of space and the body in a site-specific installation featuring both new work and works not previously exhibited in the UK.
CO-ORDINATE IV (2018) comprises two taught steel lines shooting through the galleries, intersecting at head height but never touching, and a third line cutting vertically through the Sackler Gallery. The sculptural axes both measure and energise the space, implicating viewers and urging them to look and think beyond the walls.
SUBJECT (2018) is a new series of works. Sculptural figures and the human shape feature, but rather than representing the body, they create an implicit order from mass and space that becomes an instrument for projection, empathy and mindfulness.
Gormley explains, ‘The show begs the question as to where the subject of art can be found – I am proposing that it is rooted most powerfully in the imaginative engagement and ultimately the memory of the viewer. The wager of this show is that ‘subject’ has transferred from object to experience.’
