The first retrospective by leading contemporary artist Sonia Boyce puts her work and practice from the 1990s to the present firmly in the spotlight.

From early drawings and collages to increasingly improvised, collaborative ways of making, this exhibition reflects the significant shift in leading British Afro-Caribbean artist Sonia Boyce’s work and practice, and charts her exploration of her own position as a black British woman through to her fascination with ‘what people do when they come together’.

Featuring the first screening of a film documenting a night-time takeover of Manchester Art Gallery by Boyce and collaborators including drag artists from Family Gorgeous, this retrospective also acknowledges Boyce’s connections with Manchester and the North West by revisiting early-career works made during her time at the University of Manchester and Liverpool’s FACT.
