Discover hidden gems in this little-known collection from a passionate collector of late Pre-Raphaelite art.

A great admirer and follower of the Symbolist movement, Cecil French studied at the Royal Academy, intending to become a professional artist himself.

His own career never took off, but his great knowledge of and enthusiasm for the work of his Victorian contemporaries and their later British successors resulted in a distinguished collection built up gradually over a lifetime.

Eventually owned by Hammersmith and Fulham Council, French’s legacy includes important works by Frederic Leighton, Lawrence Alma-Tadema, John William Waterhouse, Edward Burne-Jones and Albert Moore.
