An exhibition of paintings and works on paper from the Cookham Collection include a recent gift, the Portrait of Lathonia Mercer.

Gifted to the Stanley Spencer Gallery Collection by the painting’s subject, the Portrait of Lathonia Mercer (1959) is accompanied by another gift, Retrieving a Ball (1954), in this new exhibition of works by the artist in his dedicated gallery.

Many fine pencil portraits demonstrate Spencer’s mastery of drawing from life, while visitors can also see a lithograph, Burners (1941), taken from the central section of the first in Spencer's Shipbuilding on the Clyde series.

The exhibition also features popular favourites such as The Last Supper (1920) and Christ Preaching at Cookham Regatta (1952-9), as well as further new additions to the gallery collection including Portrait of Albert Henry Seager (1916), a rare drawing of Spencer's from the early years of World War I.
