Strange Worlds: The Vision of Angela Carter
10 December 2016 – 19 March 2017
Exploring the author and journalist's darkly surreal work through complementary art.
Artists as diverse as Marc Chagall, William Holman Hunt, Paula Rego, Laura Knight and Leonora Carrington feature in this display based around the recurring themes in Angela Carter's work; feminism, mysticism, sexuality and fantasy. It reveals the variety of ways that these ideas have inspired the visual imagination.
As well as paintings, sculpture and film, the exhibition includes illustrations from Carter's books by Corinna Sargood, Malcolm Ashman and James Marsh, and examples of her manuscripts, photographs and personal artefacts, providing an intimate insight into both her personal and professional life.
The exhibition also presents a series of contemporary works, such as Ana Maria Pacheco's macabre and unsettling installation, The Banquet.
