Van Dyck’s magnificent self-portrait was acquired by the National Portrait Gallery in 2014 after a joint public fundraising appeal with the Art Fund sought to stop its export to America. Part of the Art Fund grant is being used to support a tour of the painting, which has now arrived in Birmingham.
Here it provides the starting point for Stezaker's exploration into physical and metaphorical turning in portraiture. He has chosen works by Rembrandt, Rossetti, Picasso and Bomberg to further investigate this theme, as well as creating a series of new collages to add to the display.
