Omer Fast: Present Continuous

BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art

18 March – 3 July 2016

The UK’s first comprehensive monographic exhibition by the Jerusalem-born filmmaker.

Omer Fast, 5000ft (still), 2011

Using carefully edited video footage, Omer Fast’s multichannel video installations examine the conventions of media reportage, storytelling and historical representation.

Fast often anchors his narratives with a conversation between two people – whether subjects recounting their own stories or actors playing roles of interviewer and interviewee. As dialogues escalate in tension, portraits of carefully calibrated identity emerge.

Through repetition and re-enactment, multiple takes of given scenes build layers of interpretation as a story is told, repeated and mythologised.

Tales of origin, distress and longing blend into one another, forming mixed genres that confound expectations and disrupt narrative conventions.
